The survey, carried out by the consultancy Sensor Tower and released on Wednesday (8), takes into account unique downloads made in the Google Play Store and App Store, but disregards games or applications pre-installed on Android and iPhone (iOS) phones. In the case of TikTok, there were more than 115 million downloads, almost double the same period in 2019. Brazil corresponds to 9.4% of installations. WhatsApp was downloaded just over 76 million times, of which 8.5% are of Brazilian origin. India is the country that most downloaded both apps in the period. The general list also includes the trio Facebook, Messenger and Instagram, in addition to SHAREit, an app for Android that allows sharing documents between devices with the Google operating system. Another novelty is Google Classroom, which sets up a virtual classroom between teacher and students. In the specific ranking of the Apple store, there were some surprises compared to previous months. Third, is DingTalk, a communication and collaboration platform for companies developed by the Chinese group Alibaba. Also on the list are VooV Meeting, a videoconferencing app, Microsoft Teams, for team meetings, and Houseparty, a video calling app that has been accused of stealing user passwords. Delivery and streaming growth in Brazil with quarantine While the use of applications that promote virtual classes and videoconferences grows globally, there is an increase in the number of app downloads in the fitness, e-commerce, finance, streaming and delivery categories in Brazil. According to RankMyAPP’s Mobile Intelligence survey, these categories added up to around 9 million downloads in March alone. The change is directly related to social isolation, since the voluntary quarantine brought about needs such as adopting home delivery and using Internet Banking instead of going to the bank. Streaming, on the other hand, would be an alternative for entertainment with the increase of free time at home, while the growth in fitness reflects the closing of gyms and physical activity centers.
