Automotive giant Toyota has announced that it will recall 3.4 million vehicles launched in North America. Corolla produced between 2011-2019, Matrix produced between 2011-2013, Avalon produced between 2012-2018, and Avalon Hybrid models produced between 2013-2018, constitute 2.9 million of the vehicles with the possibility of malfunction in airbags. The recalled vehicles are stated to have a control unit that does not provide adequate protection against electrical noise. For this reason, problems may arise such as the airbags not deployed or the seat belt assembly working. The U.S. National Road Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced that automotive manufacturers such as Honda, Mitsubishi, Hyundai, Kia and FCA, as well as Toyota, can recall a total of 12.3 million potentially defective vehicles. 12.3 million vehicles can be recalled due to a major security issue The NHTSA said in April that it detected two accidents in which the airbags did not open due to excessive electrical load. Toyota’s Corolla model cars were involved in both of the accidents and one of the accidents resulted in loss of life. NHTSA revealed that problem airbags were installed in more than 12 million vehicles sold by Toyota, Fiat Chrysler, Honda, Hyundai, Kia and Mitsubishi from 2010 to 2019. It was learned that the airbag defect was caused by an airbag control unit manufactured by TRW Automotive Holdings Corp, owned by the German ZF Friedrichshafen. NHTSA stated that the malfunction of the airbags may have caused the death of about 8 people. Hyundai, Kia and Fiat Chrysler had previously recalled more than 2.5 million vehicles with airbags produced by TRW. Vehicle owners will be able to check whether their vehicles are affected by recall via the 17-digit vehicle identification number on the NHTSA website.
