Golf, VW’s best-selling model, sold over 35 million in 2019, making it one of the three best-selling cars in the world. However, a Golf Mk1, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro from Italian automobile design and engineering company Italdesign, is the only one of its kind. The Golf Mk1 racing car features a front-cooled water-cooled engine and a powertrain that provides traction from the front wheels. The Golf Mk1 is designed to enter Volkswagen’s economy class segment, but this racing car offers much more. Under the bonnet of the original Golf Mk1 race car is a 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder engine that produces 162 horsepower, while the car features a 175-horsepower 1.8-liter engine with Weber 45 DCOE carburetors and a contactless ignition system. Additional features added to the car include BBS wheels, Uniball suspension and racing brake system with four-piston front and two-piston rear caliper. The Golf Mk1 racing car was in the Nothelle family, which has been running the car modification company for years. In 2011, Marcus Nothelle restored the car on behalf of Volkswagen AG. After the first launch of Golf in 1974, the car was introduced by Rolf Nothelle in Belgium in 1975. The car also won first place at the Hockenheimring Grand Prix with its driver Bernd Lilier.
